Bush has done a number of things right, though they tend to be outshadowed by all the dumb moves. But meeting with the Dali Lama in private with no press allowed was hardly a courageous statement of support.

Not really. Since the Beloved Leader didn't even pay token lip service to Tibetan Independence and Human Rights.
It's more likely that Bush used the opportunity to have the NSA install tracking devices on the Dali Lama's stuff so that his Red Chinese friends can target the Holy Man more easily.

He did something very right. The U.S. does not need to kowtow to the PRC. It is an interesting contrast to Gerald Ford backing out of meeting with Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn due to USSR pressure.
