I'm looking for a word that describes a country that is the opposite of a consumer culture a country or society where the per capita income is low enough that people cannot afford anything other than capital goods. For example the United States before the consumer culture revolution in the early 20's

I definitely think critically about the images and expectations for women and men. Unfortunately, I do not believe that critical thinking alone acts to dissolve stereotypes and unfair expectations. Not only do we need to think critically, but we have to consciously work some of these gender-based expectations out of our thought processes. That will be the only way that society as a whole will change. Thinking people must act. Those who don't think will follow as a matter of course.
