hell yeah they are they act like you are wasting there time by buying something, then when you ask to talk to a manager you get some snob as guy who acts like he owns the world and needs to be punched in the face.

well that is a two way street you know! i have been a cashier and a waitress many years ago and a bartender too.and of course i shop, and dine out too.so yes sometimes that is true and sometimes people are so rude, smelly, they let their children run and scream and cry throughout the store, knock things over and do not pick them up and block aisle ways and are dirty, smelly and just rude!!! you try it for a week you might have a different view! good luck! these people are on their feet all day ,do not get full time hours or benefits and hardly any pay so it really is not a job that commands much respect but it should!!!good luck, these people have bills and families just like you and me!

hhaha i had to answer this question as i am a customer service and cashier assoct. anyways i believe it's all a matter of where you are and etc. i myself am actually a really nice person and even when i don't feel like it i still am. just who i am. but you have to look on one side. what about the customers huh? trust me customers aren't always the best and damn some of them are rude and mean at the same time. so i say it's both parties fault.

My experiences have been the same as the user above (laitness). I know some customers are really nice and polite. But my experiences (from observing as a fellow customer AND working in retail and other areas of customer service) have included more rude (and down right cruel) customers than the opposite.

I've run into several lately that were surprisingly nice - in fact, our waiter at a restaurant last night got a 30% tip because he was more helpful and kind than I'd seen in years.
Someone earlier also made a good point though - it's getting harder and harder to live on minimum wage and folks in those jobs may just have more stress to deal with. Doesn't excuse the behavior, but does potentially explain it.

So are the customers. It's a two-way street. Some people think customer service people get paid to take abuse. They're human too and can only take so much.

I was treated rudely by a hostess at a casino restaurant recently so I asked to see the manager. After I told him how rude his hostess was to me, I suggested he move her to another job with no direct customer contact, such as in the kitchen making salads, etc. which I would have done as a former restaurant manager.
The manager replied; " this isn't the military." End of story.

i think so. but at the same time it's probably because people the customers are getting ruder. i know what it's like to be behind the counter and get treated like you're invisible or something. it hurts. but i was raised to be polite so despite customer's rudness i am still polite

As someone who has worked as a cashier/CSR, I'd have to say the consumers are getting ruder. Especially around Christmas.
