I had a doc appt today. Im 37and a half wks. I am a gestational diabetic and not all but a few of my levels are still high. He told me my baby could just die in there if I didnt get it right.Does anyone else think he was out of line and how true is that anyway when all my non-stress tests come out great and they tell me my baby is doing fine. Im 2wks from delivery and have so much stress from a lot of other things and now this.

LISTEN to your doc. Love all the answers from people "who don't know, but..." and then give advice anyway.
Gestational diabetes can cause many complications, to mom and baby; and yes, some of them can be FATAL.
1] large baby [ macrosomia ] - can cause delivery traumatic to mom and baby
2] blood sugar imbalances - the baby is used to producing a lot of insulin because of all the mom's blood sugar it gets. When you deliver, the insulin doesn't stop right away, causing baby's blood sugar to drop dangerously low - untreated, could cause severe damage.
3] if elevated blood sugar develops early in pregnancy, can cause heart, kidney, eye, and nervous system defects.
4] many infant of diabetics have delayed development of lungs - they could be full term, and normal or even large size, but must be treated for hyaline membrane disease. [ oxygen, ventilator, drugs ].
ALSO, people who develop gestational diabetes frequently [ more than average ] go on to develop diabetes. Keep weight in normal range, and watch the diet - forever!

I can tell ya, my Doctor is the EXACT same way. He's really bland, and doesn't have a very warm bedside manner. But I've kept him as my Gyno b/c he "tells it like it is" which I actually appreciate over "sugar-coating" in situtations like this (pregnancy).

Having said that, yes, I think your doc was a bit out of line. Doctor's train themselves to think they're God, and also train themselves to look at each case with no biased, sometimes causing them to be VERY dry and "matter of fact" and forget about their patients' feelings. Especially when it comes to their patients' babies!

Have a talk with him next appt. Tell the nurse (who takes your BP, etc) beforehand that you need a few extra minutes for a consultation with the doctor. Then, sit him down, and ask him to explain exactly what all of this situation entails, and what you can expect, and what warning signs to look for, etc. Since he knows your case, he should be able to give you information SPECIFIC to your case, not just generalized, "By the Book" facts/statistics. Don't settle for anything less. B/c you're a gestational diabetic, you're actually considered "high risk" and your doc needs to treat you as such, no matter if your condition is common or not!

Good luck! It'll all be over soon! :-)

Doc is trying to scare you. Not a tactic that will help a person that is already stressed out. I would be ticked off if I were you. I had GD and I found that when I was stressed my readings would be high REGARDLESS of my diet. I could eat a meal that I would get a low reading on normally and STILL have it be through the roof. High blood sugar levels not only can make the baby bigger but it affects their lung development so it is VERY important that you try to control your sugar levels. If you can't eliminate your stress try meditation, yoga, meditative spa type music...anything to bring it down!!!

How is that out of line? It's the truth, and I am sure every doctor is trying to minimize risks to their patients and babies - however they can. The fact that you are not doing well with gestational diabetes is a real fear for your doctor, and me actually (fear for you), and it effects you and your baby. I think right now your only things you should be worry about is the diabetes, labor next and everything else is not important, it just isn't!

Your doctor could be thinking that telling you drastic information might help you control your diet better. I'm 13 weeks and my doctor told me to watch my carbs and sugars because my glucose level is a little high. I have been and hope that at my next visit things are good. She hasn't threatened me though. Let him know you didn't appreciate that but don't make too much of a stir if you still want him to deliver your baby. Good luck!

Your doctor leaves alot to be desired for his bedside manner, but he was not out of line. He could have been less blunt.... true, however you should be happy he is being honest with you instead of trying to spare your feelings.

Yes, I definitely think your doc is out of his mind.
As far as I know diabetes makes babies big, fat, which is not the best thing but surely doesn't kill!
