If they eat fermented sugar (alcohol) they can get drunk. This happens to certain monkeys on caribbean islands, they got used to eating fermented sugar cane and now they steal alcoholic drinks from resorts.

If they are getting drunk off fruit it's because the natural sugars in the fruit are allowing fermentation to take place.

Here's a link about the monkeys:

Alcohol is produced when fermetation occurs. Fermentation can occur with any fruit or vegetable with a high enough sugar content. A common way for animals to get 'drunk' is eating berries that have over-ripened and have turned their sugar into alcohol. This indeed happens with the berries surrounding our building each fall. There are limited choices in foods so the birds come to the trees and eat the berries. They become drunk enough to fall off the branches and lay in a stupor for quite some time but eventually wake up and fly away.

When fruit gets ripe it falls from the tree. Then as it starts to rot it ferments (with no sugar involved). They eat the rotting fruit which causes them to get drunk. Many types of monkeys do this.

Bears eat fermented apples or eat so many they ferment in their digestive tracts. I have also seen birds get drunk on over-ripe berries that have started to ferment. Sugar plus yeast yields ethanol.

Some birds (Cedar Waxwings) and others will get drunk from eating overripe berries that have fermented. They can die if they ingest too much.
