teaching to the least bright ROBS those who understand and need further challenges. If you have slow learners, group them in a separate classroom. This offends the 'touchy-feely' crowd I know, but education, while presented globally, is an INDIVIDUAL obligation. Teaching to special needs children is a vastly more difficult process than teaching to the norm.

If the overall score is too low, the school loses its federal funding. Once this occurs, programs and teachers must be cut in order to make up for the loss of funds. It hurts the children and even punishes the ones that did score well. Also, many times the teachers are blamed for the poor test scores where in inter city schools there is not a lot teachers can do. Not many people want to teach public school anymore because of this so it is harder to get teachers. There are a lot of things wrong here.

It measures success only by checking test scores. So, teachers are forced to teach to the tests, that is, teach only what the children will need to know to pass the government tests. The teachers get no rewards for working hard to make class exciting or teaching new things.

Also, many teachers lie about test scores in order to make themselves look better. So the numbers we see aren't even accurate.
