The government doesn't provide social security it is the return of funds that the employer and employee have put into the system that is return to the employee (retiree) when that person retires.

The government is the repository for funds collected and must segregate those funds into special accounts to be held in trust for the retiree.

With that said the government has spent the money writing IOU's to the trust fund so the government can wage war and do other things. Obviously social security funds are a cash cow for the government and are spent almost as quickly as they come in. Our leaders in Washington recognise the problem that we have which is the bill will be coming due on the IOU's and we don't have the funds to pay for the hoard of retirees that are expected so our leaders must change the rules of the payout.

By the way....in case you think our government stinks.....YOU ARE THE GOVERNMENT. If we want to change things then we the government must change them and not count on our leaders in Washington to lead.....we've left it up to them and you can see the results.

Of course. That is something that helps may people live after they can no longer work. Although yes it is becoming a crunch, that doesn't mean you just give up and so "Oh well that didn't work." When President Roosevelt instituted the program he didn't think of the future so much, never expected a baby boom, which is not his fault, just an overlook of population growth. If we stick to just American citizen getting it, that can help. No program is perfect, but in time some kinks can be worked out.
