USS Reuben James by German U-boat in the Atlantic before the US was officially in the war

Dozens of US merchantmen ( Athenia was NOT American) in the Atlantic by German U Boats before 9 December 1941

USS Panay by the Japanese in China, 1940.......

but the first to be sunk after war was actually no foolin' around underway .....would be Arizona......Oklahoma and Utah were on their way down when Arizona blew up and beat them to the bottom of Pearl Harbor........an S class sub would be sunk in Manila the next day but war had not been officially declared at that point

first US warships to be sunk after war was officially declared on 8 December 1941 would be USS John Paul Jones and Pillsbury in the Dutch East Indies by the Japanese

A wreck.

Sorry, bad joke.

The battleships Arizona and Oklahoma were sunk at Pearl Harbor. Arizona went down first.
