A pro-choice Republican will never get elected.
It would be a waste of an election if the Republican party ran Guiliani. Republicans would vote 3rd party in droves. The crucial religious right vote would be gone. However, it looks like it may happen, and if it does, get ready of 4 years of Clinton wealth-sharing.

I think the Republicans will probably go with Rudy since he was the mayor of New York during 9/11. Pretty solid credentials there.

Thompson may or may not be lazy, have you seen his wife?

Romney "flip-flops"? I assume that means he's changed his mind on some issues. Why would anybody want a guy that looks at the issues, mulls them over, then sees how he could have originally been mistaken? Would Bush ever do that?

(Not to most Yahoo! users: the above contains sarcasm. Have some one explain that to you before you get all worked up)

For the primaries? Hard to say. Fred Thompson was supposed to theoretically, swoop in and take all these unsatisfied conservative voters but so far he has not impressed, mainly because, like you said, his perceived laziness, and also because of the mini-controversey involving him briefly working as a lobbyist for a pro-choice group. Just as an observer, I like Thompson personally but I honestly can't see him going the distance in a campaign, and I think if a lot of people have that perception that will be damaging. The longer he's stayed out the more he's let the media define him, he needs to work hard to shake this perception among not only GOP primary voters but the general public, and I honestly don't think he will do it. Particularly, if Thompson can't take all these dissatisfied conservatives, which was supposed to be the entire purpose of his candidacy then I think you'll start to see his numbers drop pretty quick.

It seems like the race is coming down between Giuliani and Romney. And the Christian conservatives are finally beginning to get behind Romney despite the Mormon issue as well as the flip flopping like you said. I think they're doing this because, realize, since Reagan and particularly under George W. Bush the Christian conservatives have had major power in the Republican party, eventually becoming the dominating influence, you notice that the moderate-liberal Republicans are getting fewer and further between. With the Karl Rove strategy they were the most important group of voters and in both elections helped Bush sweep Middle America, the South, and the West. Here's the thing with Giuliani, despite their major influence he has refused to change his positions on abortion, etc. Say what you want about Giuliani, that was a politically corageous move, and, surprisingly, it hasn't even dented him in national polls.

When Giuliani refused to change his position, he made a powerful statement: that he was not going to be controlled by the Christian conservatives. Given his high poll numbers and the good chance of him being nominated, they realize that if he is nominated and/or elected they could lose major power in the national party which has been growing since 1980. On the other hand, they know they can control Romney, and he has become something of the last choice for them to turn to.

What is odd to me is why they didn't line up behind McCain earlier. Despite his criticism of Jerry Falwell and public perception as a moderate he has maintained a consistent socially conservative voting record, and to me, showed he was willing to play after he made nice with Jerry Falwell by speaking at his university. If more lined up behind McCain then, he may be in a similar position as Hillary Clinton to get the nomination.

Ultimately, given his strong leads in early states I believe that Gov. Romney will eventually get the nomination.

Rudi is only anti gun compared to a democrat. His positions on gun control are regulatory which annoys the pro gun lobby but they know they stand a far better chance at keeping their guns with Rudy then with Hillary.

Thompson isn't lazy, he's sly like a fox. He had a very good reason for not announcing sooner, believe me it's working. He's my pick for the 2008 election.

confident. right this is one: obama is an abject failure as a pacesetter. He became right into a failure 4 years in the past and he's a good better failure right this moment. No turn-flops right here. quite with the components changing and all, this is a splash too chilly for turn-flops. do no longer you think of so?

But Thompson is an actor, Ohhhhhhhh he is sooooooo dreamy, just like the adorable Ronald Reagan who sold Chemical weapons to Iraq to gas the Kurds and missiles to our good friends the Iranians. (Gee, how did that work out for us?) Well, we might have ran with our tail between our legs from Lebanon, but we will always have Granada. (Semper Fi???)

Perhaps we need a lazy person right now. Someone who is not so intense about changing the world.
