Talk to your lawyer BEFORE changing the locks! Also see about setting a date by which time he MUST have his things removed, so he will no longer need to come to the house.

First off let me say that I am truly sorry you are going through this. I pray that the Lord will be with you. I "know" how painful it can be and I can tell you that although the pain lessens it does leave a scar. It will get easier in time. Hang in there. I hope you have a good group of "girl" friends and family that will support you and hold you accountable. Don't do anything you will regret. Rely on your family and friends and seek WISE counsel.
Everything depends on what state you live in. Check with a local attorney. California law says you can't prevent him from coming "home" since that is where he lives as well. If you can show cause "abuse" you can get a restraining order. Once he has left the property for the required period of time you can change the locks. There are attorneys that you can consult with for free and some that you can ask questions of over the Internet.
Best wishes.

Well this is my opinion, by why not just ask a lawyer. The first meeting is free and non-committal. She no longer lives in the house and therefore does not have the right to come and go as she pleases. But you don't have to put it that way to her, as she will go hostile on your ***. Tell her you don't feel comfortable with her coming and going as she pleases. Try to organise a time and day that would be convenient for the both of you for her to visit the dogs. Change the code on the keypad, and the locks if need be. She has no right to protest, she doesn't live there anymore.

If I were you I'd have already changed them.... if there's already a legal process going on and he has moved out, there's no reason for him to continue coming into your house, especially when YOU ARE NOT there.... I'd ask the lawyer just to be on the safe side but it's YOUR house so I think you have all the right to change them ASAP.

Are you serious? you guys actually change locks? why not just take the keys off em before they leave so they dont get a chance to copy them when you finally do ask for the keys back?
My 2nd husband's ex wife used to sneak into our house and steal things while we were gone I layed a trap found her in my house took pictures and video and threatened to use it to the cops if the stuff wasnt returned , should have then she couldnt have kept custody of their son and used him as a power pawn gainst his dad , cause kids not allowed in jail.
Change the locks NOW that way theres no extra television style melodrama of murder's and what not.

you can probably change the locks now but talk to an attorney and file a restraining order at the same time. If he has anything still left there, throw it on the front lawn and if he comes in or threatens you, then file a police report and have him thrown in jail!!

Change the locks but as far as not feeling safe it might be worse. If he knows he cannot get into the home then he will probably be even more mad.

If his name is on the deed to the house then he has a right unless you have a PFA against him.
If it's a apartment then check with the Management to change the locks.

Change them now. Get a restraining order. Box up his stuff for him and call his family to come get it.
