There are many reasons:
1. If you choose the right book reading can become really great.
2. It helps you spell better (by reading this question I noticed you don't read much)
3. It's a good way to exercise your brain and learn new things.
I hope I helped!

Reading helps us to 'see' words and how they can be used more imaginatively - its supposed to help spelling but I am an avid reader and my spelling is still awful! It does assist the brain to be creative itself rather than having images given to it so it does develop the imagination and a good reader will always be involved in what they read - so much so that they can 'block out' externalities. It should eventually assist in expanding vocabulary and more importantly, assist in the formulation of ideas or translating the formulation of ideas given. And its fun. And its a way of communicating. I love it.

Because it helps to stimulate the mind and reinforce what information is seen in books. Just like writing, reading helps promote awareness of knowledge and you are far more likely to remember something you have read than if you were told to you by another person. If you read what you like , then you will like what you read ! There is logic in that last sentence.

Developing your reading skills and comprehension is your golden ticket to the world of information. Being able to read gives you the opportunity to learn new things that you won't have a chance to learn in school, and helps you achieve in advanced learning programs.

Reading is the most common way of obtaining information. If you cannot read, or cannot read with sufficient comprehension, then you cannot access the vast majority of available information. It boils down to a survival skill.

So you can learn more vocabulary, which leads to better spelling, and you would recognize that you should say "why" and "important." It also taxes your imagination, as you enter into a whole other world!

like every one else said..." you learn to spell"
and also, reading maximizes your ability to concentrate.
if you get hooked into a book your imagination widens and you become generally, more happy:)
it helps your vocabulary also...so when asking questions (at www.answers.yahoo.com for example;]) you know how to write them properly.
i hope you can read well enough to understand this (pronounced "zis")

If you read and can understand what you are reading, you can learn anything.
Learning is not so bad. Learning can be fun. "Don't let school get in the way of your education."
