10 divided by 2 = 5
10 multiplied by 2 = 20
10 divided by 1/2 = 10/1 divided by 1/2
= 10/1 x 2/1 = 20
10 multiplied by 1/2 = 10/1 multiplied by 1/2
= 10/2 = 5

My math teacher explained it to me in a way that made sense. You have to translate the words to math language.
There are certain key words that mean different things,
Equals key words- is, are, was, were, will begives, yields
sold for
Addition-increased by
more than
combined, together
total of
sum
added to
Subtraction- decreased by
minus, less
difference between/of
less than, fewer than
Multiplication-of
times, multiplied by
product of
Division- per, a
out of
ratio of, quotient of
percent (divide by 100)
Hope this helps!

Look for some key words
Divide: quotient, split among, shared an amount equally, etc. Multiply: product, times, #of sets of #each, $ per hour worked, etc.
(look through some of his problems and make a list of the most common words used)
Try asking his teacher if she has a list of words that are commonly used in 4th grade. (I teach high school, so I don't know what 4th graders are expected to do)

hmmm...it would depend on the problem, but i'll try my best 2 explain.
whenever he has to divide, the problem will usually ask him to split something up into groups. (for example, if u have six pieces of candy, how can you divide them equally among three people).
whenever he has to multiply, he is doing the opposite and making a quantity bigger (for example, if u have 30 for a test average, how many times more than that do you need to get your grade up to a 90).

5 divided by 4. (to see how much you paid for them) then divide 5 by 3 to see how much you plan to charge then after you have those answers you subtract them (1.67-1.25) to see how much you made off of that card (42 cents per card OR .42) Then 100 divided by .42 I hope that's right.

Not much in my case. I hated those dang things back in the 70's. I guess we relate boring word problems into things we could relate to for easier understanding.

An example would make it easier to help explain. Do you have a word problem to give us?
