Some of their reconnaissance troops got to within 20 miles or so of the Kremlin but the German army was pushed back by a counteroffensive by the Red Army starting in early December 1941.

:),
the quick answer is "no". The Germans got to the outskirts of the city but never got "into" the city. The Russians were ferocious fighters (the Russian Winter and lack of planning on the part of the Germans also helped the Russians ~ things like lack of winter clothing, etc) - lost 20 Million people during WW II - compare to the 600,000 + the Americans lost and you will understand why the Russians think they single handedly "won the War". Stalin had asked the Allies for two years for a "second front" - then when "he" got one, he didn't acknowledge the significant contribution.

Stalingrad my friend was a different story all together. The Germans pillaged, raped, burnt, stole, and did other things common to war and victors in battle. The last 9 months of the war the Germans did lose more than 5 million of their own population - a point never discussed in popular media circles where WW II is discussed.

If you see a Veteran - thank him/her for their service and sacrifice. For this question my friend YOU get a star!

Best to you!

Gerry :)

Yes, by the middle of October 1941, Moscow was a front line city with almost daily attacks by the Luftwaffe. German infantry got within 25 miles of Moscow, close enough to see the sparkling spires in the distance.
