I notified my boss that I am coming late to work. He asked me the reason. Does full time employee have obligation to report the REASON of being late to the employer?

No, but you need to consider that he MIGHT have been trying to cut you some slack if there was a good reason. If there wasn't, your best bet is to say "no excuse, sir. It won't happen again."

You're already late. No sense adding bad attitude to the impression you made.

If you are perpetually late they can ask why and they can also ask you to get a note signed by a doctor or dentist (whoever the appointment is for). When you were hired, you agreed to be at work during certain hours of the day. When I am late, I always let them know why just so they don't start to think that I am no longer interested in working for them.

It probably states in your employee handbook. If not you should ask HR. I know from experience your coworkers will respect you more if you have a reason. I hate it when someone is late and they don't apologize or even acknowledge that they are late.

As far as him legally being allowed to ask why you're late, he absolutely can. It's his business and you're his employee.

Your boss doesn't have that right, but the owner does. It's his job, not yours and he can make almost amy rules he wants to.
Find out from HR what those rules are.

They usually ask why to know if it s a valid reason. I always say "personal reason" and they drop it.

not anymore there should be a privacy act that protects you go over your bosses head or human resources and find out
