Yes and no. They aren't 100 % effective, but they're pretty close - around 99.95% (and that figure includes people who don't know how to use one.) However, the pill is slightly less effective than condoms - and doesn't offer any protection from STDs. And the pill can actually stop working altogether if you are taking antibiotics (I know - that's how my wife got pregnant.)
Stick to a reputable brand of condoms -I find Trojan to the the most trustworthy. And if a condom should break, remember that pregnancy is only one of the things he could be leaving you with. See a doctor as soon as you can - just to be sure.
Good luck!
PS: Remember that ALL forms of birth control are flawed, except abstainance. IUDs, the pill, condoms, shots...none are 100% effective.

Some people say condoms are good enough but it just depends on the percentage of safety YOU want. You can use condoms with spermicide gel and that seems to be extremely effective for a lot of couples. I haven't tried it myself because I've always been on the pill and now have an IUD. But if the condom broke, you would have a back-up barrier of the spermicide (which is like a gel/foam that you can put inside the vagina prior to intercourse) to aid in the protection of pregnancy. good luck!

The only method of not getting pregnant or contracting STDs is to NOT have sex. However, that's clearly not an option many sexually active people want to take. I would recommend going on the pill or another method of birth control aside from using condoms. Condom's are a great precaution, but if you want to be absolutely sure and lessen your chances of getting STDs, look into better methods of birth control.

Sometimes condoms are good, however if you don't want to get preg than you may want to get on the pill. Because a condom don't have to be broken in order for sperm to flow through the condom can also have a hole in it and you won't even know nor will your partner.

It's better to use a condom in combination with taking birth control. My parents relied on condoms for contraception and... well... accidents happen... and now I'm here! Best of luck!

Condoms are 99.97% effective if used properly. EC is a good resource if it breaks. The main thing is making sure the condom has not expired (look on the package). Make sure they are stored in a cool, dry place. Extreme temperatures can cause them to break so don't leave them in the trunk of your car. A good fit can prevent breakage as well.

Condoms can break easily and sperms can also go through. I know people who have tried both condoms and pills at the same time, and still got pregnant.

not good enough - they are not 100%!
Consider birth control - it'll be the best thing you ever did. It doesn't have to be the pill...there are other alternatives - for example: I'm a HUGE supporter of the NuvaRing! In for 3 weeks out for one and repeat, it's fantastic!

NO birth control is 100% except for abstinence.
Therefore, anytime you have sex you risk the chance of pregnancy.
