OK - key is to combine and get x on one side
2x-3=5x+12
2x = 5x + 15
-3x = 15
x= -5
Check
2(-5) -3 = 5(-5) + 12 ??
-10-3 = -25 +12 ?
-13 = -13 YES!!
Hope this helps.

first add three to both sides thus
2x+3-3=5x+12+3 so
2x=5x+15 then subtract 5x from both sides
2x-5x=5x-5x+15 so
-3x=15 now divide by -3
x= -5

Okay, first what you do is subtract 2x from both sides. This gives:
-3 = 3x + 12
Now, subtract 12 from both sides. This gives:
-15 = 3x
Divide both sides by 3 and you get:
x = -5

Subtract 5x from both sides and add +3 to both sides, so the x expressions vanish on the right side of the equation, and the numbers from the left: (2x - 3) - 5x + 3 = (5x + 12) - 5x + 3 (2x - 5x) + (-3 + 3) = (5x - 5x) + (12 + 3) -3x = 15 Now divide both sides by -3: -3x / (-3) = 15 / (-3) x = -5.
