"Space Race" refers to whenever two countries (formerly the US and the USSR, now the US and probably China) are trying to accomplish some big thing in space technology.

The most famous case (at least in the Western countries) was putting a man on the moon. In the East, however, they would argue that putting a satellite in orbit was more important.

In the past, the primary motivation for accomplishing these tasks is that having the ability to put anything you want in orbit or on the moon means that you could create military assets (i.e. bombs, bases) in places that the opponent would find it hard to strike.

Ultimately, the higher you are on the mountain, the harder it is for the other guy to get at you. This is just taking that concept ... above the mountain.

By the way, in the above poster's comment regarding the pen and pencil...

Actually, the correct figure was about a million dollars, though that was 1970s dollars so quite a bit more by today's standards.

However, the technology of a pen that can write in any position has easily paid for itself, whereas the Russians gained nothing with pencil technology because it was (is) common place.

NASA etc. created all kinds of new technology which has created all kinds of markets and solved all kinds of non-related problems by licensing off this technology. According to the GAO, every dollar spent on the Apollo program (and those leading up to it) added 9 dollars to the economy with new industries, new technology and new markets.

The Space Race was a competition of space exploration between the United States and Soviet Union, which lasted roughly from 1957 to 1975.[citation needed] It involved the efforts to explore outer space with artificial satellites, to send humans into space, and to land people on the Moon.

Though its roots lie in early rocket technology and in the international tensions following World War II, the Space Race effectively began after the Soviet launch of Sputnik 1 on 4 October 1957. The term originated as an analogy to the arms race. The Space Race became an important part of the cultural, technological, and ideological rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Space technology became a particularly important arena in this conflict, because[specify] of both its potential military applications and the morale-boosting social benefits.
