You should know where each candidate stands on ALL the issues. There are more important issues out there than gay marriage and abortion, but those issues often sway the votes. People against abortion will vote republican every time regardless of where the candidate stands on every other issue like this ridiculous war. Sure, you got a president who is pro life, but we're in a war based on lies where thousands upon thousands have been killed or wounded and no end in sight. We have a president who does what he wants...period. He doesn't listen to anyone around him. He is so stubborn and that's dangerous.

The first thing you need to know is that unless you live in a swing state, ie. Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio your vote means bull-dookie.
Sorry to break it to you, but the electoral college makes sure once you truly understand how the political process works that you never really want to take part in it ever again.
Might as well vote for anyone other than a republican or democrat, that way you at least make a protest vote.

You should know the candidates well. Whether you are a republican or a democrat, you should know the ideas of the candidates, their plans, etc. Based on that you should be able to know who is your favorite. Also know the other things that will be on the ballots, propositions, etc. It will not hurt to take the time and read what else you may vote for.
And, most important, remember to register on time.

You need to know where to go to vote. Polling places are sometimes moved from year to year. Also, you need to know what day the election is, what time the polls open and close, and whether you are required to bring any documents (id cards, etc.) with you.

What are the issues, long-term and immediate, and what are the positions of the candidates on those issues? If nothing else, it will show you who NOT to vote for, which will narrow the field.

Where the canidates stand on the issues that will affect you - your freedom of religion, your pocketbook, your children. Also how their beliefs will affect the future generations of Americans from abortion to social security and dealing with terrorists.
