Sarah - I do have both soundtracks for Queen of The Damned and I really like the score one.

Can't believe I missed out Forrest Gump - thanks!

The Crow...
Fear and loathing in Las Vegas...
A Clockwork orange...
Apocalypse now...
Basil Poledouris, (Conan the barbarian, Cecil B. Demented.)
and Danny Elfman soundtracks, (Beetlejuice, and every movie not scored by Poledouris or John Williams...) are usually pretty darned good.

Almost Famous
Forest Gump
Pink Floyd The Wall (duh)
A Beautiful Mind (Howard Shore is an amazing composer)
The Hours (Philip Glass is also an amazing composer)
Queen of the Damned has a great instrumental soundtrack too (very haunting) but I do agree the movie was horrible, completely ruined the book for me.

edit:
geminia28: Wow, great examples. I completely forgot about Dazed and Confused (how did I?), Garden State, Across the Univerese and I Am Sam, and I'm a big Beatles fan

Almost forgot: This Is Spinal Tap!

Most are mentioned already but would like to put a shout out for a soundtrack that is everywhere on television at the moment. People think it comes from Return of the King but in fact it comes from this:

Requiem for A Dream - Clint Mansell

Other mentions would be

The Blues Brothers
Forrest Gump
Natural Born Killers

I've even seen Lux Aeterna from Requiem being played on Childrens TV which is weird considering the content that Requiem shows.

I love movie soundtracks ... I buy them more than I buy "regular" CD's ...

some of my favorites are
Meet the Robinsons
Brokeback Mountain
Donnie Darko
Say Anything ...
Titanic (minus Celine Dion's song ;))
She's Having A Baby

and I agree with you about John Williams ... but add Danny Elfman's work too ... amazing !

And of course most of the Disney soundtracks !

Natural Born Killers is the BEST!!! For classics though, I always loved Footloose and Top Gun. This list can not even begin without Grease and Saturday Night Fever.
