4a-4 = 2a+14
Subtract 2a from both sides.
2a-4 = 14
Add four to both sides
2a=18
Divide both sides by 2.
a = 9

OK..first things first..since you don't know how to start...
You want to get all the A's on one side of the equation..in order to do that..you need to perform basic mathematical functions to any or all of the items, to eliminate them from the side you don't want them on. These basic mathematical functions are adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying...the things you learned in first grade.
Once you get the A's on one side, you will need to break it down to find out what 1 A is
Whatever you do to one side of the equation, you have to do the same to the other:
Lets get started:
Lets get the A's on the left side, and get rid of everything else on the left
1. get rid of the 4 on the left side and add it to the right side
4a -4+4 =2a+14+4
now we have 4a=2a+18
2. OK get rid of the 2a on the right, and bring it to the left side..since we want the A's on the left
4a-2a=2a-2a+18 (see we need to subtract 2a from the right, so we also subtract 2a from the left)
now we have 2a=18
2a=18
OK now remember we want 1a , not 2a's
2a/2=18/2
a=9!!!!!!
Proof:
4(9)-4=2(9)+14
36-4=18+14
32=32
therefore A does =9
note== if I worked the other way, and brought all of the a's to the right side, It would have broken down to
-18=-2A
-9=-a
IF NEGATIVE 9= NEGATIVE A THEN OF COURSE 9=A

First subtract 2a from both sides.
When you do this, you get:
2a - 4 = 14
Now, add 4 to both sides. When you do this, you get:
2a = 18
Divide both sides by 2. You get:
a = 9 for your answer.
