Most books should. As an author, I recall when my son was little. He adored Tiny Tune Adventures Cartoons. Laughed his head off. But I began to notice that the authors were very much aware that there were adults somewhere off in the background also listening and that the cartoons also had a second level - one that appealed to adults and gave them things to laugh at. I started to listen to the hip political jokes and such tucked into the kids humor and it really got me thinking as an author.
Lemony Snicket is a MASTER of this. The Series of Unfortunate Events has that bi-level appeal. He was very much aware of writing for both kids and adults and his books have a very hip, edgy side for adults as well as being great stories for kids. Just the names Sunny and Klaus for the kids is a scream if you know who Klaus and Sunny really are.
Any author should be aware of this when writing for children. Parents read books to children - give them some entertainment as well. Way to go Lemony - you really "get it!

The Good Good Pig by: Sy Montgomery
I love this book!!! It made me and my mom laugh! It is such a cute story, but may be appropriate for ages 10 and up due to the fact that its got over 100 pages. Good luck!!

Green Eggs and Ham
The Princess Bride (25th Anniversary Edition)...it's considered the 'good parts version' by the author, William Goldman, who adapted the original by S. Morgenstern by cutting out all the extensive satirical descriptions...if you've seen the movie, it's more like that. It makes it more enjoyable for children.

How old is the child? My six-year-old daughter loves Junie B. Jones and they make me laugh as well.
