Aside from the obvious - because they like them - you could also consider Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Some film genres, for example horror and sci-fi, create a feeling of belonging amongst audience members. The group experience is part of the enjoyment.
Another posibility is that the genre allows the audience member to experience fear and benefit from a rush of adrenaline, while in a safe environment. Perhaps the need to repeat the rush felt when watching this type of film encourages the viewer to seek out more and more horrific films in order to experience the same feeling.

Can watch most genres but not horrors - they freak the hell out of me and very sensitive soul me - Halloween H20 I could walk the streets after dark for 3 months - drove my boyfriend mad and made him understand that I cant watch horrors.
Watched the ring a couple of years ago and had to get rid of the tv and had my brother move in for few weeks until he got tired and a i had to move back in with my parents...
Love romcoms and actions but a real good thriller gets me everytime

Because some people actually try to watch every movie they possibly could. I worked at Hollywood Video. There were some weird movies i saw. personally i don't just watch the movie. i have the ability to study it at the same time. watch the shots the angles and lighting. Horror movies tend to have some of the best angles. because its got to be different. more personal, in order to instill fear in you. Others like to see how dying looks, they love to cringe up when they see someone breaking there own foot. some people just watch them cause its funny some times. how lame they are. Mostly cause they like them.Its what they grow up with. Its simple. You like action you'll walk to the action section first. What do you care anyway? Your not watching them anyway.

My favorite genre is probably romantic comedy, followed by psychological thriller. Romantic comedy - I like the fluff, the cute storylines, the happy endings. Psychological thrillers - I like to have to think about what I'm watching, to feel the suspense, to wonder what's going to happen next. Two very different genres, both very enjoyable to me. It has to do a lot with personal preference. I don't like war films; I watch movies to escape, not to relive a brutal part of history.

I guess cause everyone's got his own choices, like someone likes cheesy romance and the other likes things with lots of fights. Maybe some people get pleasure in getting a good creep and like supernatural things

well, some folks like comedy , some like horror others like romance , and even mystery movies or who done it ? I myself like romance and comedy mostly ,don't care too much for those horrors they never make any sense and after all we all enough in the real world with Iran / Iraq wars going we could all stand for alot of comedy these days.

most have a storyline so it's just like any other media.
