It had no monetary value. Gold jewelry was worn or gold gust was powdered over one's body to be precious in the sight of god. form of money for exchange was another matter. I forget the source of my comment.For the conquistadores was a commodity for exchange; so they plundered. . .

I believe they used it as a from of currency and they probably used it for trade as well.
