Most likely it's a problem of insufficient memory. If you have a lot of hard disk space empty, you can assign some of it to work as additional memory.

Your other solution is to add memory so that your computer runs faster. This will prevent it from 'choking' or 'freezing' when faced with a memory-intensive task, and running video is extremely memory-intensive.

Another option is to buy an inexpensive DVD player, burn the shows to DVD and play them there. As a single function unit, a DVD player may be able to perform better for you.

The reason that you've heard about losing files when syncing is because that refers to syncing the device to an empty library. Transferring files from the iPod to the computer is called transferring, not syncing. To transfer them, use Yamipod. It's free. I highly recommend that you get rid of any content that you got from shareware. It's not only illegal, but your iPod can be carrying a virus from it that you don't want to risk giving to your new laptop. When you're done with the whole process, create and keep back up copies of any files you don't want to lose. I'm sure you now understand why.
