Names like Chester, Floyd, Hortense, and Erma were really cool once...and will be cool again, because NOBODY uses them now. BUT it could be a punishment to your child if you miscalculate and name them something "cool" a decade or two before they sound stylish again.

It's mean to name your kid some crazy celebrity-type name unless you're fabulously wealthy because they have to live with it when they are middle aged and have to get a job. Also, it's been proven that people with African American-sounding names get called for job interviews far less often even if they have the same EXACT job qualifications on their resume as someone else. Some people use names that could be boy or girl to avoid gender discrimination--although it can be confusing for people and a problem sometimes, too.

Unfortunately, chances are no matter what sounds cool to you by the time they are in their teens what you like will be old style. Or worse, you and everyone else in the world will have thought of the same "cool" name.

Think of these trends...
Whitney, Brittany, Courtney, Tiffany 80s-90s
Brianna, Gabrielle, Danielle, Chloe, Zoe
Taylor, Tyler, Kody, Korey, 00s
Zack, Jack
Hannah, Emma, Makenzie, Madison

Maybe you can find a name that means something in your family so your kid can explain it (I'm named after xxx) or give him/her just a middle initial so your child can "pick" his or her own name when older.

I wonder if Moon Unit Zappa likes (his? her?) name.

pshh people think really obvious, common names are cool? Silly people. The coolest name I've ever heard of is India, she's my best friend and gets commented on her name constantly. I love it, very pretty. For boys, uhmm there's a guy I know named Ferrik, it sounds like ferret, I think it's a pretty sick name.
