Most dogs shed just as much as cats, if not more due to the size, so that really shouldn't be a consideration. Dogs are also a lot more work, and I'm assuming you have enough to do at the moment without the extra hassle. Why don't you wait for a while until you get a pet? A baby of 3 months will more than likely be waking once during the night at most, and will be more interested in the world, so you can pay attention to both equally.

To be honest, I'm afraid of having dogs around infants. They can show extreme jealousy. My daughter was bitten on the forehead when we were visiting a relative. She was crawling on the floor and the dog ran up to her and attacked her for no apparent reason. The dog just didn't like small children and nobody knew why. If she had been teasing the animal, then I would been able to understand but she did absolutely nothing to it. She wasn't even near it either. To this day, if I see an infant and there is a dog nearby, I will watch the dog for signs of aggression.

A short hair breed of cat would not shed as bad as a long hair, so that may help. I personally don't trust dogs around infants. Either way you go, I would avoid puppies or kittens as they are playful and may accidentally injure the baby. I have had ferrets around my sisters children and not had any problems, so that might be another way to go.

I would recommend a standard poodle. They don't shed and are hypoallergenic. The standard size tends to be better behaved with children than the toy, the toys can get slighlty grumpy. Poodles are easy to train and have good tempermants too.

I think your best bet would be to look into adopting an older (not neccissarily elderly) pet. Kitten or puppy, whichever you decide, but preferably one grown out of the hyper teen phase!
