I am studying the Holocaust and just read Night by Elie Wiesel. I talked with someone and he said that its in the past and things like that should be forgotten. My major is criminal justice and one of my main focus is researching older crimes. I like to read about victims. I think all the victims of the past deserve to be recongized. I wanted other people's opinions on this.

i just read that over the summer. what an amazing story. to answer your question, i believe there should be a balance between remembering and dwelling. in all of my education on the holocaust we were told "let us remember and never forget". i am all for that. but you can't live with that pain every minute of everday. not even survivors can do that. it would be too much of a weight to bear.

Ben are you a war criminal or something? No self respecting person would throw a sign into that word as you did. The crimes of history should be studied in great detailso that they are never repeated. Was your friend close to the situation? Many people who are close to these things do not like to speak of them. Now as for being recognized it sounds like you are looking for financial gain in the matter. This is not the recognition the are in need of. What is in need is the way we as a society treat our fellow man.

People need to remember. Its a huge part of our history and makes each of our families who they are. The dead shouldn't be forgotten. History often repeats itself in some way. I think knowing about the past can protect us in the future. We can learn from our mistakes and our tragedies.

Remembering is important. If you don't know history you are doomed to repeat it. The person you talked to sounds pretty apathetic and uninterested in expanding their knowledge. Since you aren't, you should take advantage of that.

In this as in all things moderation is key.

There is equal harm in clinging to past harms and letting them poison our present relations as there is in forgetting the injustice.

We should memorialize, we should not invoke the spectre

Depends upon how events are remembered and how remembrance is used. The Holocau$t is no longer just an historical event.

We should never forget. Learn the lessons of history so you can avoid them in the future.
