I have 1 pendant I want to polish up and clean so I don't want to buy a whole thing of silver cleaner just for that. Are there any common substances you can use to clean it (its silver plated) that I might have around the house already?

Try your regular acid and base, white vinegar and baking soda. Put the baking soda on piece of foil wrap (needs to be foil or metal of some kind) add about two tablespoons of baking soda (enough to cover the object). Put the one piece of silver in and add the vinegar and wrap it up so the liquid doesn't run out.

Let it sit for about 5 minutes, then open it up (it creates a funny smell) and you can use the paste to clean the silver some more (gently) rubbing the silver with the foil helps shine the tougher spots.

If it is very valuable be careful don't want to ruin it for you. But I have tried this on silver rings and it works great.

a small bottle of silver cleaner properly capped will last for about 50 years!! I use silver polish to clean a lot of things other than my tea set, jewelry and flat wear.

Wood ash from the fireplace works well as does cigarette ash!!! Who'd a thunk cigarettes would be good for anything??

Tooth paste is universal in cleaning any jewelry, mirrors, brass buttons, etc.

Place sheet of tin foil in a bowl. Add hot water, couple of tablespoonful of salt and water softener, immerse silver. There is a reaction (don't know what it is called) but the foil attracts the tarnish. Rinse off in clean water and dry thoroughly. Works for me. Good luck.

Line a glass dish with aluminum foil, add about 1/3 cup baking soda and cover with boiling water (to dissolve the baking soda). Let it soak in there and dry it thoroughly once the tarnish is removed (mineral deposits in the water cause tarnish).
