I haven't had crank callers, but used to get sales people. I used to be a foster mother and kept toddlers temporarily until they could find permanent families. My favorite thing to do to sales calls was to hand the phone to one of the toddlers, preferable one who only spoke baby-talk in Spanish. The toddler was thrilled to receive a phone call and the sellers seldom bothered to call me again.

I usually just hang up, ignore them and try to hear for any people in the background I might know, or I put the phone up to my speaker or headphone and put the volume up to full blast (you get the idea what happens next).

i don't answer the phone unless i recognize the number on my caller id that way you don't get crank calls

I don't get crank calls but have had my share of telemarketers and this is what I have said:
"Oh, excuse me, but I get paid for listening. Could I please have your credit card number so I can bill you."
It will utterly confuse them and they will hang up on you.
