My average for grades 9 trought 12 is around 75%. I don't know what kind of GPA it gives, but I am sure it's pretty low. I tried to explain that to my father but he just yells at me and says not only geniuses get accepted there and I have to apply to all of them. Now the thing is he wants me to only apply there, and no safety school. I told him it is unrealistic and that even people with the best GPAs at my school still apply for a safety school.

He just says he don't care. I told him my counselor told us about the grades required to get in there and he told me he only wants us all to go to a University, no matter how bad it is, so that his school can write most of their students got accepted to a University, and he said the counselor doesn't care about the students.

No matter what I tell him, he keeps yelling and saying I will be accepted and I have to stop saying I am horrible, and then he gives me examples and says thousands of students get accepted there each year, and that it's impossible that each of them is a genius. What am I supposed to do? I want to at least apply to some less selective places but he wants me only to apply there and is 100% sure I will get in, no matter what I tell him.

He also heard about early application and absolutely wants me to apply early, even thought I am not even done with my essay nearly nothing is ready! I told him it's better to apply at the regular date with a great application than to apply early with a crappy one but he still won't listen.

By the way, what are the best schools I can expect to get in? My grades went up since the beggining of this year, I think I will do great on my SAT and I will probably have a perfect SAT II as I took my native language (French), Math I and Math II, hopefully this will be helpfull. I can also speak 3 languages, maybe I can put that in my application.

I also showed him the statistics about students admitted. 92% of the students were in the top 2% of their class, yet he still told me 8% were not and that still gives me chances!

He don't understand.

You'll get into a community college and maybe a lower end state school with those grades. The languages are a plus, as are any extra curriculars. Go to Harvard's web page and print off their admission requirements and bring your dad your transcript. Plus, it costs a lot of money to apply to schools you can't get into. It's a waste. See if your counselor can bring your dad in for a meeting to discuss the issue if it keeps being a problem. Printing off the info. or sending him to the website, or even having him contact an admissions counselor may get him to see that you can't get in.

You know what's missing from this? Any mention of what YOU want to do. College is a big descision, and it is YOU, not your dad, who has to live with the consequences. You will do better in a school that YOU want to go to, ivy league or not.

I think you need to take some time out to figure out what you want to do about applying for college. What do you want to study? Do some research and find out what schools you like that have programs in that discipline. Tell your dad to back the **** off...his yelling and pressure are making the situation worse, not better. You are going to have to stand your ground on this, and things will likely be unpleasant between you for a while, but it's really important! The key to success is figuring out what YOU want, not what other people want for you.

If that turns out to be an ivy league school, then go ahead and apply. The odds might be against you, but you still do have a chance. At least try...what do you have to loose except the time you spent working on the application, and the price, if any? Your counselors advice about having a back-up school is a good one, though-don't lock all your hopes on one place.

Unfortunately, a lot of parents get crazy over college admissions. Sometimes, they feel like the college their child gets accepted to reflects on them personally, or they want to compete with other parents by getting their kid into the "best" school. All this is stupid, irrelevant, and irresponsible. This is the first big, important choice you have probably been called on to make...so make it for you.

Your dad is right, the counselor is wrong. Everyone in the Ivy doesn't have a 4.0 HS GPA in the top 5 of their class. There are plenty of other considerations and it's very possible that you can indeed get in.

The only way to know if you'll be accepted is to apply. The opinion of anyone who is not on the admissions committee doesn't matter in the slightest. Apply and find out.

If your dad really wants you to apply to Ivy League schools, and he is paying the application costs, there is no harm in applying. You may even get accepted. If you don't, you can tell him you tried.

Nothing is stopping you from applying to any other school. Your parents don't have to sign your college application. Apply to the schools you want to attend, or that you think you'll get into. You just may have to pay your own application costs for schools your dad doesn't want you to apply to.

you need to find out when these colleges are offering open house dates to visit the college, then speak to an adviser there and bring your dad! they need to talk to him since they can't get to him through you. or even bring him to your high school to talk to your guidance counselor
