Stuart Sutcliffe played bass I believe, and McCartney switched from guitar to bass after he left.

John Lennon said that when they played for the queen of England.

Stuart Fergusson Victor Sutcliffe (23 June 1940 – 10 April 1962) was a British musician and artist.

Until his early death Sutcliffe earned praise for his paintings, which mostly explored a style related to Abstract Expressionism. Sutcliffe was a friend of John Lennon, and was the original bassist of the English rock band The Beatles for two years. Sutcliffe and Lennon are credited with naming the group after Buddy Holly's band the Crickets. Sutcliffe enrolled in the Hamburg College of Art after leaving The Beatles and studied under future pop artist Eduardo Paolozzi.

Sutcliffe met photographer Astrid Kirchherr in Hamburg whilst playing there, and they were later engaged.

If you read any accounts on their early days you will know that it was rumored that Sutcliffe could not actually play bass and was only in the band because he was one of John's best friends. When Brian Epstein insisted on getting rid of Sutcliffe,Lennon threatened to quit but was eventually shown the error of his ways.It was one of the few times John did not get his way.Anyway McCartney played a lot of rythym guitar back then and even did some lead work when because of his age Harrison was not allowed in some night clubs or venues.

Stu played bass but he really couldn't play it. Paul often would unplug his bass before the group went onstage. He had bought this instrument from prize money he had won after selling one of his artworks. Stu was an artist, not a musician and he realized it so he quit the group.

John made the comment at a command performance in London at around the end of 1963. The queen and other members of the royal family were in attendace. He said that those in the cheap seats should clap their hands while those in the more expensive ones should rattle their jewelry. What he really wanted to say was ******* jewelry but decided not to.

Billy J. Kramer covered "Little Children", "Bad To Me" "I'll Keep You Satisfied", and "From A Window", all of which were written by John Lennon & Paul McCartney.

Paul sang lead on "Love Me Do" while John played harmonica.
