Every labour is very different, and no two pregnancies are the same, so you can't really take these answers as a given for your own labour.
I just had my first a month ago, and my bump was relatively small (I didn't have much water in there, I was told.)
I was in labour (established labour that is) for two hours. Pre-labour (with contractions and labour pains) lasted 12 hours.
I didn't have any pain relief. By the time I got to the delivery room from the antenatal ward, it was too late to give me anything. I delivered very quickly.
If you're expecting, the best advice I can give is just to go in there with an open mind.
Don't worry about it-the way I thought of it was, either way, it's going to hurt some, and baby will come out one way or another. Labour is inevitable. You can't change it so don't worry about it.
Plus, the more you worry, the worse labour can be-it only gets major painful if you're not in control.
You can do it! Be calm, relax and go with the flow. You forget the pain afterwards anyway-I promise.

Well, my bump was HUGE! And I started showing really really early.
My actual labour lasted only 8 hours (and could have been even quicker but I did not let the doctor break my water right away when I got to the hospital.) I was SO mucky because usually first babies are LONG.
BUT, for 5 or 6 weeks before that, I had been almost in early labour. I'd have major contractions for about an hour or two, then they would stop. I started dilating at 32 weeks, and 5 days before giving birth I was already 4 1/2cm! I was on bedrest for 3 weeks, or else my son would have been born premature. He was 3 weeks early anyways!

Three and a half hours from the time my waters broke until I delivered. My waters broke at 1am, I had my first contraction at 2am and after a fast furious and extremely painful labour the baby was born at 4.30am.I guess that's lucky for a first baby but I did tear very badly which took a while to heal. My aby weighed 5lb 12 oz and was 2 weeks early. Hope this isn't too much detail. Good luck!

I was in labour for 16 hours with my only daughter, but that is from first contraction through to her being born. I did have a big bump and massive water retention so looked like an elephant (lol) but have friends that had tiny little bumps... I think it is the way your body is and the shape of your uterus apparently depends on a lot...

I got to 36 weeks before being admitted to hospital for choleastasis (liver not functioning properly) I was induced due to fear of a stillborn, my baby wasn't happy at being induced so had a c-sec & we had a 7lb 7oz baby girl, its the most amazing moment of my life, a year on i get goosebumps thinking of it.
Bump wise, i started off a tiny size 8, or 8stone 5lbs, i ended up with the biggest bump going, a size 40 inch waist & 13stone. I'd like to add proudly that i am now a size 10 & just over 9 stone, but i cant get a tight tummy anymore lol

I was in early labour from monday night thru to Wednesday night when we were finally told I was 2 cm's dilated. It was along slow start as the baby was posterior and not pushing his head onto my cervix to help contractions.
Despite being told it would be long slow and painful due to his position it was bearable - I just had paracetamols until about 3am Thurday morning when I started on gas and air and got into a birth pool. I delivered at 10am that Thursday and it was fine (despite the shoulders getting stuck!)

I was 38 weeks when induced. I was induced on May 17 at 0800 and in labour by noon. I gave birth May 21/07 at 0230. I was finally 4cm dilated on May 20th at 7pm and had hard labour till about 130 on May 21. I only pushed 40 min. My belly was HUGE. My baby was a girl who weighted 8lbs 1/2oz and 21 inches long.
Every one is different. Generally speaking first births are longer then subsequent ones. Hope all goes well and congrats on your baby!
