You poor dear...sigh. I empathize; even after all my time. Both 1& 2 being first and second, offer the best initial notion; though the pliers or wire cutters might give you a bit more leverage.
On a light hearted note, do you ever wonder why we keep hitting the same finger/thumb? Smiles.
Certainly there is also another solution, depending on the application you're involved in...Screws and a cordless tool.
ICE works well in brief stints to lessen pain and swelling. A decent pain reliever pill; a 2 oz. glass of Irish Whiskey helps; but by then you should probably put the hammer away.
Blackend fingers under the Finger "NAIL" can be DRILLED in some method to reduce pain and swelling as well.
Welders gloves are rather clumsy and don't truly absorb much shock; but then I can't know how hard you swing your hammer.

I had to add this thought. The two answers above mine brought back some great memories.

Daddy taught me when I was 3. Hold the nail with your fingers. Hold the hammer handle right up next to the business end. Tap lightly until the nail has a good start. Turn it loose, and move your hand back a little on the handle to get a harder swing. By the time I was 4, the only thing that stopped me from moving all the way to the end of the handle was that it was too heavy. Daddy could drive a 10 penny nail in 4 whams. Takes me about 30, but I'm a great grandmother.

Another way to keep from getting your fingers hit when hammering a nail is to hold the nail between your middle and index fingers with your palm up. Lightly tap the head of the nail. If you happen to miss, there is more padding on the palm than the top of your hand.
If you are using small nails you can get a strip of masking tape and line up the nail(s) in a row. Then fold the strip of tape over onto itself and you have a row of nails that will stand up ready to be hammered.

There is a hammer that u can hook nail onto without the need to hold nail. Use correct sized hammer, if u use a large hammer to knock in as panel pin, then u will whack ur fingers.

Use a pair of needle nose pliers to get it started.
Hold the hammer as far down the handle as you can.
Perhaps use a lighter weight hammer

You can buy a hammer with a nail starter and this can solve your battered hand problem.

Instead of a hammer - use a bag of feathers or a picture of a puppy.
Happy to be of service. As usual.

Try a nail gun, available from all good diy shops and online at screwfix.com. although this is a good and easy way of banging nails into a wall, with your track record of accident prone'ness you may shoot yourself in the foot or worse, your pet or family member!! Just be carefull, you'll get there.

look before you swing...
clothes pegs and pliers are also good... but i have a spring loaded, magnetic tube thing, you pop th enail into the tube, and hit it, with another hammer... you remove the tube and bangt he nail on the head...
my mum bought it me, so i suggest you look in the poundshop... or as usual try ebay
