I have to come up with an idea for a documentary proposal.

Why not create a documentary on how the world is getting smaller through popular access to broadband and people using instant messenger. (I already have friends from all around the globe - which I wouldn't have without rapid Internet access). How will this shape future society? What changes are visible today, tomorrow, way into the future??? How will people react? Who is being affected by this? Is this a good or a bad thing? Does it add or detract from the modern idea of society?

I have offered a single idea. YOU DON'T HAVE TO TAKE IT!!! There are a million and one documentaries waiting to be made - so you have a fairly broad choice of topics.

Involving elements of dignity, creativity and skill, the best documentary (IMHO) are both informative and inspirational. While not directly causing change - they inspire others to change, and through these individual changes - they affect the greater society. The motivation may be an identified injustice or as a positive step forward in broader society-development.

(Do you remember the 2 minute BBC news item that sparked off Live Aid???)

If you know what your expected audience is looking for in a documentary, you will know what it takes to entertain, develop and inform them.

School lunch programs. You will find some happy news, some grossout insensitivity - enough to push anybody's buttons!
Some schools line them up at 10AM for a lunch of tater tots and pizzas. Others microwave them a Hot Pocket.
Children are getting obese, they're not getting good nourishment; they aren't learning because of when/if they eat.
There are some systems with such good ideas - schoolyard gardens, healthy plates, etc.
The easy part is that children are naturally photogenic.
