in a room in my basement there is a wall that i want to put cabinets on, but right smack dab in the middle of the wall( concrete block wall) is a outlet. it drops down from the ceiling about halfway down the wall and is obviously in a metal pipe thingy. im thinking maybe i could bend the pipe and just have that outlet near the ceiling, which would actually work well in that area. can i do it do you think? or should i call an electrician. im pretty hands on so i would like to try.

Yes that is fairly easy. Turn off the circuit first. Is the conduit (pipe) just a piece reaching toward the ceiling and ending, or is it connected to box or continues on? It will collapse and pinch the wires if you bend it.

If you can find the breaker for this outlet to shut it off you should be okay. I always recommend an electrician for safety reasons.
Make SURE power is off to this outlet first.
Shut it off and open box with outlet in it. Take the wires off the outlet. Take box off conduit. If you want the outlet high just use a tube cutter. This way you dont have to pull wires out of conduit before cutting. Or maybe you are lucky enough to have a coupling where you would like the outlet. In this case just take the coupling off and the pipe between it and the outlet box. Then put the box on the pipe again and cut the wires down to at least 6" sticking out. Strip them and reattach to the outlet and put it back together. You will want to screw the box to something too. IF on concrete you will need a hammerdrill and anchors.

Yes it would be simple to bend, but you should use a conduit bender. You don't want to put sharp kinks in the tube. Like someone else said - turn off the power first.

If you try to bend that conduit or more likely
Electrical Metallic Tube, (EMT) in place, you
are likely to pull it and it's wiring out of the
hidden box to which it is attached and buy
yourself all kinds of trouble.
Best let a pro do this one.

there is no reason that you cannot do this yourself, turn the power off first and if you are not taking the power down so far you may want to try and cut the conduit (metal tube thingy), a good hack saw with a metal blade in it should do the trick.

yep but first turn the power off to it,
the metal pipe thingy is a conduit, it can be bent but you need a conduit bender,
