It depends on your topic and what you're summarising. Generally a summary is a short explanation in concise form of whatever has been written. Naturally the detail is in the article so the summary just 'adds up' what it is about. For example, if you were writing a summary about, say, a film, let's say 'Titanic', you could summarise it thus.

This is a story of love between two people of widely differing classes. It takes place in a real setting, the disastrous last voyage of the ocean liner Titanic. The bond between the two highly mis-matched lovers grows, despite adversity, until the final fatal culmination as the mighty liner strikes an iceberg and sinks. The story is remembered and brought to life many years later by one of them who survives and joins an expedition in an attempt to recover lost treasures from the sunken wreck.

Separate your notes into two to four sections, dividing the book wherever a major plot shift occurs. This will help organize your summary, helping you devote equal time to each part of the book.
