The mechanic said something along the lines of the Inner seal is breaking into the boot. I wish I knew more about cars but I just know the basics.

In any event, that seems like $800 is a little early for this to be happening? Do I just eat it and pay for it or should I seek further advice?

thats not normal for it to be leaking at 40,000 miles, pretty premature, I would ask the dealer if they could cover it under warranty seeing thats it's only a couple thousand miles out of warranty, never hurts to ask.

It's normal if you do a lot of driving over rough roads, hit potholes, do hard cornering, etc, anything that's hard on the steering. 40K is way too soon for this sort of repair for driving under normal conditions. $800 is expensive, but allowing the problem to go uncorrected will cost a lot more down the road.

Try your dealer, there might have been a recall on this part for your vehicle.
