The plague of "text messaging" and on-line chat. Unfortunately, it's making real written communication a lost art among some.

Abbreviations like this serve a useful purpose in certain kinds of online communication, to whit: they make typing a message shorter and easier. This is important on devices without full keyboards, or in IM, where waiting too long to respond can make the other party think you've disconnected.

What people who hate these conventions often miss is that context is very important to communication. These sorts of cenventions are fine and serve a useful purpose as long as they stay within the media that spawned them (IM, text messaging, etc.). People who use them in that context are neither illiterate nor stupid-they are using a convention that helps them deal with the limitations of the media.

It's when those conventions are taken outside of that context (IE, when someone tries to use them in oral conversation or in a written report) that they become ludicrous, because the limitations they were designed to circumvent don't exist.

Sometimes annoying, especially when the whole sentence or paragraph is nothing but those abbreviations, but they are a handy shorthand out here on the net. Just don't be standing right in front of me and say OMG instead of what it means. Or say LOL when actually laughing would be easier.

Lazy is probably closer, "texters" (a neologism i hate along with "tasking" and "summiting"), people want to save wear and tear on their poor beleaguered thumbs. Also, the concern may be financial - when being online where time literally is money, the shorter the message, the less time it takes to type, the less time spent online, the less money spent.
