My guess is that it needs a good oiling (and maybe de-oiling if someone used an oil that gums up like 3-in-1) followed by re-oiling. Maybe a belt if it's not a potted motor.

Suggest you might want to join the yahoo group "wefixit", a group of sewing machine mechanics, pro and amateur, who enjoy tinkering with and restoring old machines to running order. Some good information files there, too, as well as expertise and possible parts sources.

Somewhere on the machine is a serial number, probably one or two letters followed by numbers. Call 1-800-4-Singer and they'll be able to tell you the approximate age of the machine and the model, which will let you ask better questions on "wefixit".

the belt is slipping, get a can of belt dressing at a hardware, spray the pullys, on motor and sewing mach, this will make it pull better,

is it belt driven if so you mite have a loos belt
