Couple of problems with that theory:

1. Even if everything completely turned around in Iraq, the war will not be over by election time.
2. The war was based on lies and half-truths, and you cannot get back the lives of 3800+ people who died needlessly.

Pfo...Bush said this war would last six months....it has been six years...even a turnaround now cannot save the perception of this war.

1) True, it won't be over. But if it's showing progress, that would demonstrate that Republican leadership in a time of war was working, and that the strategy was working. Since the Democratic base doesn't like the Republican strategy, it is in the Democrat's best interest to make the Republican strategy look bad, and unfortunately we need every American's help to insure that doesn't happen, including Dems.

2) Speculation, of all that talk about the lies none have proof. Democratic leadership in government doesn't say this, why do you? And they lie about everything.

Those are fine points of distinction that seem to exceed their ability to understand. They are in trouble and they know it. Whether it's suggesting that a measure of success in Iraq means the Democrats lose out, or them clinging to the absurd notion that Sen. Clinton is unelectable, or that the evangelicals will turn out in droves to vote for a pro-choice candidate just to keep out Clinton, it all smacks of desperation. Their candidates are so flawed and that there are those talking of splitting the party! But they won't focus on that obvious problem, which would hand the election to Clinton on a silver platter. They just seem to pretend there aren't problems and that on Election Day everything will magically fall into place.

The drum beat will be anything to beat the Democrats, especially Sen. Clinton. But relying on their old character assassination tactics is only going to backfire on them. Their own top tier candidates are much more susceptible to negative interpretation upon close inspection of their own political records and personal histories. The Republican's biggest problem? The wooing of the evangelicals is not going so well. And those people are pretty stubborn about their votes. They won't cast a vote for a pro-choice candidate or one that has pro-choice activity in their background, simply to prevent a Democratic victory. If they're counting on those people to help defeat the Democrats they better come up with a viable anti-choice candidate but quick. Because we all know what the evangelicals do when they're unhappy with their choices. They stay home.

Progress in the war will show why it was needed and democrats have already admitted the problem if the surge works.

nobody needs an attack to win avatar president . It would show that nobody has done anything to protect us making both dems and gop look very very bad but especially the GOP being they had control of congress when homeland bureaucracy was formed and all the dems who voted for that would go down as well -I think the war on terror is being fought incorrectly and misusing our resources that is why I am voting for ron paul who will do the right thing -

Republicans keep saying the Dems want the US to fail because it's a lie that many voters will believe. They know this from their focus group studies.
