The Cure, yeah I'm a Cure-fan since 1983 but are they legendary like for instance Zeppelin in the 70's?

Robbo: Selling albums is good, but I don't think Zeppelin or The Stones are concidered legends because of the albums they sold! And besides Leppard do not apply here it's not New Wave.Thx anyway

Robbo 2: sorry man, didn't mean to offend u, maybe I really didn't make it clear what I meant. But as the record sales (and the sold out concerts someone mentioned) are concerned I can only add, that according to official countings amongst the most sold albums are some by n sync, the back street boys and maria carey, I wouldn't call them legendary, ever! and on the other hand one of the undesputable legendary albums is never mind the b... by the sex pistols and I don't know if they even hit the top 100! eitherway, u definetly have the right to disagree. the thing that counts is that u answerd. thank u!

That's just it- I can't think of *Any* 80s bands (let alone just new wave) that reached the heights of the heros of the 60s & 70s.
I don't think any will either. The 80s are over 20 years past us now & I'm not really hearing people speak so highly about any. (compared to the way people still revere guys like Zeppelin or Pink Floyd, for ex.)

I do think a few bands have reached something *close* to legendary status, relegated to "80s legends". As opposed to the 60s & 70s stars who're Rock Legends, period. Y'know?

Def Leppard. One of only six bands to ever sell over 10 million albums on TWO seperate occasions for two different albums (Pyromania and Hysteria) in the States. The other bands are Led Zepplin, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Eagles and Van Halen.

(EDIT) ... Reply to ASKER: You never defined "New Wave" dude. There was of course the "New Wave Of British Heavy Metal" movement back in the early '80s which is where my answer comes from!!

And I'd argue that record sales has everything to do with "legendary".

(EDIT) ... Reply to ASKER: Woah no offence was taken I just wanted to get my point across.

My record sales point was that although Def Leppard aren't really mainstream, the fact they managed to shift so many records in a hard to break foreign market like the U.S. being such a specialised genre of music that isn't your normal pop / r&b / hip-hop was a legendary achievement.

And they're still "New Wave" ;-)

Once again I agree with Fonzi because I can't think of any legendary bands of the '80s, let alone new wave (legendary new wave is an oxymoron to me) I didn't hate any of it, it was what it was and it was barely a guilty pleasure for me (gone).

'80s was all pop and commercialization.

I listened to rap, dance/pop, freestyle, R&B (the real good stuff, though not the slow stuff) and of course rock (from our only rock station RI 104)
