I'm in the Army. Some have said 18 is the legal drinking age on a military installation. That is absolutely wrong. Even though 18 is the legal age in Korea, it's still 21 anywhere in the world if you're in the U.S. Army, punishable under Army law. There is however, an Army regulation that allows the Post Commander to lift this law for a Post Function if he/she so chooses. I've never seen this done.

I don't drink, but the age limit I think is ok considering how much trouble young soldiers get into for drinking even after 21. But, pshh .. that's hardly the most shocking. You have to be 21 to stay at a decent hotel in most states, 25 to rent a car and 25 to buy Ammo at K-mart, regardless of your military record.

So You could have served in the Army for 6 years, be a platoon sergeant returning from Iraq with medals of valor having led men to their deaths and saved lives and still not be able to rent a car when you fly home, or buy buck shot at K-mart.

The two have nothing to do with each other at all. You join the military voluntarily, you are no longer forced to serve. I would rather see our young soldiers sober when they have an important job to do. Mixing an 18 year old with alcohol and a loaded gun isn't a good idea. Neither is it a good idea to give that same 18 year old access to a car where he could harm other people after having a few drinks and driving home.

The drinking age was 18 for a few years, but it was a disaster, so it has been going back up to 21. It takes much more mature, developed responsibility to drink than it does to follow orders and fight.

Research has shown that the part of the brain that deals with reasoning isn't fully developed until the early-mid 20s.

Personally, I think both the drinking age and the age to join the army should be 21 because they both involve making responsible decisions.

They tried lowering the drinking age to 18 during the VietNam era, for the same reasons you stated. It was a disaster.

While I think the current drinking age is too high and ineffective, your argument is rather weak. You can't become President either, but thems the breaks.

On military bases, the drinking age is only 18 for this very reason.

you have the right to go and get killed by yourself. You do not have the right to get wasted and get others killed at least not legally until you are 21.
