The increase in social deviance among kids and the increase in school violence is brought about by several factors.

1. A lack of discipline in the home by parents leads to kids not having respect for teachers or other elders.

2. The current philosophy in schools is that everyone should be made to "feel good". Criticism is limited or discouraged. This creates kids that have difficulty dealing with any harsh statements or teasing by fellow students.

3. Increased violence portrayed in movies or on TV as well as the real violence kids witness on the streets has desensitized them to it. Many kids don't put much value on human life because of this.

There is almost certainly an "imitation" aspect. It is difficult to judge how much comes from that, compared to other social influences, and genetic characteristics. If there is an increase of occurrences (rather than just an increase in reporting of occurrences) the root cause is likely unknowable. I think part might be hyper-stimulation. Our environment is far more information-packed than in the past, and much of the interactions children get used to these days are rapid: just look at how fast you get answers here! When interacting with people (especially in a school environment) directly, things are rarely so rapid. This could lead to frustration, the eventual venting of which could be a shooting.

As for prevention, the best bet is making sure teachers/administrators keep a personal relationship with their students, and learn to recognize the warning signs so that help can be gotten before things get out of control.

Actually, there IS no increase on school shootings.

The only difference is that it is now happening more in rural/suburban (i.e. white) communities. Just as many shootings occurred in the 80s and before in urban areas; but they get less media attention. Just as when a missing white teen goes missing in Aruba, it's weeks of coverage; a teen black girl missing in Philadelphia gets nada.

What preventive measures can we take? Stop actively creating cultural landscapes that alienate teens and encourage the development of the cruel, rigid high school cliques. Smaller schools, communities based on people instead of automobile use, and creating avenues in which teens can feel like active and productive parts of the community, not outcasts.

I don't believe there has been an increase in the PERCENTAGE of school shootings, there are just more people now than there used to be.

And a certain percentage of the general population, like 5 % or so, is just crazy. Nothing can be done to prevent crazy, it is just here.

It is not the media's fault that we have become a world of people who thrive on shock journalism. Not to mention our government has a stake in keeping us scared.

We can enact thousands of laws, put thousands of more people in jails and still not be safe, there will always be crazy.

And we already have the laws on the books to punish people, more laws will cost us more rights and solve nothing. Laws don't change people.

These things happen every so often. The media blows it up, turns it into a referendum on gun control, and makes everyone paranoid.

In the end, there is no preventing a madman from doing anything. Just killing him when you catch up to him.

I think that the media encourages copycats, but with our young people today being raised with NO morals, where else would the decay begin but in the schools? They took out God, they took out corporal punishment, if they don't have the proper upbringing at home, then our kids today are doomed.
