They were all around before the space program, but the space program revolutionized their design

they all can save you from something, bullet proof vests from bullets. windshield wipers can save you when you are in a car and something splats on to your car and can't see you get into a car crash but with that you can wipe it off. signal flares help you when you are lost somewhere. fire escapes help you from dieing in a case of fire in the building so you can escape and not face your death.

Following the space theme; they were all improved by the space program, but would be useless in space.

You can't eat any of them. They come in very handy in case of emergency. And, NASA probably had something to do with each of those things.
