It worked fine until last night...suddenly all suction is from the hose only (up by the handle)...very little suction with the floor brush. Normally this happens when it is completely upright (suction automatically goes to hose) but suction at floor brush all other times....Now..none at floor any time.

I checked the belt...it appears fine and brush is spinning as it should...just not sucking up anything from floor...only from hose

Check the belt...
Your vacuum is not making a good seal with the floor. You should have got a Kirby

This is not going to help you really but my Dyson did the same thing a couple of months ago and I just couldn't deal with it so it went to the tip. I've now got a Morphy Richards and it's fantastic. I can't believe the suction power etc. I don't think Dysons are all they're cracked up to be. I've heard that Kirbys end up ruining carpets so I'd watch that one!

check to see if your belt is broken, and replace it.
