They try to mate for life but things happen and the romance gets smashed. Sometimes, there aren't enough good seeds to to start again.

That's really sad. Someone somewhere has lost it. Pumpkins do mate for life, and it is so grand to to see Mr.& Mrs. Pumpkin, and all the little Pumpernickels.

How do you know that the pumpkins you looked at aren't carnivorous? Perhaps the ring is the only thing their mutant digestive system couldn't process. I'd count myself lucky if I was you, maybe they had already ate.
