That's really sad. Someone somewhere has lost it. Pumpkins do mate for life, and it is so grand to to see Mr.& Mrs. Pumpkin, and all the little Pumpernickels.

How do you know that the pumpkins you looked at aren't carnivorous? Perhaps the ring is the only thing their mutant digestive system couldn't process. I'd count myself lucky if I was you, maybe they had already ate.
