Yes sooooooo I either don't answer the door or when I open the door (behind a security gate with a screen so the person cannot see me) I saw no thank you and shut the door.
I never buy anything sold door to door even from kids.

Yes, I do. But what I hate even more is people at work pushing the stuff their kids are supposed to be selling for school. I don't really mind an e-mail saying, "I have this stuff that my kids are selling so contact me if you're interested." But I do not like being approached personally with a sales pitch. Some people will even bring it up a second or third time and get huffy if you're "not interested in helping the kids," as if I have some kind of responsibility to do it. I'm always nice about it, but I sometimes want to say, "Hey, I already buy from kids in my own family; I'm not taking your kid to raise, too."

Just because someone decides to knock on your door - you have absolutely no obligation to answer it.
If you see that it is kids selling cookies or chocolate bars that's one thing, but adults going door to door is not only pathetic (and I do feel sort of sorry for them) but it can also be dangerous, for them or for you (depending on who is more socio- or psychopathic).
Mostly though, it is just inconvenient, irritating, interferes with your activities and is invasive of your privacy.
So, if you can see that the person is a stranger with something to sell (and is obviously not someone needing help for an emergency), you needn't even answer the door. They will get the message faster that way then if you do answer it and get into a conversation.
Also they won't have the added hassle to their day of another rejection. It is just an unanswered door and they can go on to the next.
If someone needs to speak with you about an urgent situation that is for your benefit (not theirs) you can be sure that they won't waste their time by coming to the house of a complete stranger without phoning first to make sure someone will be home when they get there.

It depends on who and what they are selling. Usually I get kids that are trying to sell something to raise money for school. If that is the case, then I will buy something.

That depends. Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts...no they don't bother me.
An adult trying to sell me something...yes, that would bug me to no end.
The likelyhood of someone coming to my rural neck of the woods...not real great.

oh yes. Then I see this poor chap standing there in the cold, all wet and dripping, clutching his little saucepan cleaning brush and a dirty old suitcase leaning against his wooden leg - and I spend a fortune on stuff I don't want!
