I am thinking of living in my travel shoppe this winter, can anyone offer suggestions on the best way to get internet access? My work depends on it and I am clueless about traveling and being able to get online to work. Use a cell plan? Satellite? or is there some other possibility?

Thank you :)

Many McD's has wifi, and same with a lot of other restaurants & bookstores. Plus, many motels offer it as a free service as well. Also, local libraries often have internet available. Just show your DL & sit down at any computer station. Happy vacationing!

Wifi is the wireless technology standard used all over the world for Internet access. Phones that have wifi, like the iPhone, can save you money because you can use free wifi hotspots to access data instead of paying to use the 3G cellular network. You don't pay a fee for wifi, as that simply refers to the wireless chip in your laptop or smartphone and the wireless router which is installed in hotels, cafes, bookstores, etc. which allows you to log in and access the Internet. There are some services that you can sign up for like AT&T wifi and pay a monthly fee to be able to access all of the not-for-free wifi access points that are run by them. The best way to go, especially if you are traveling to places you're not familiar with, is to get a laptop and simply search for free wifi hotspots. Many restaurants, public libraries and parks, bookstores and malls provide free wifi access. The disadvantage to that is obviously that you cannot access the Internet from everywhere you are, only at those free spots. If you pay for a smartphone you can access the Internet anywhere the cellular signal is available (which is almost anywhere in the world) but it is generally quite expensive in terms of monthly fee for unlimited data plans. Also, if you are traveling out of the country, Europe, Asia and some other areas use a cellular system which is not compatible with some American cell phones (assuming you're a fellow American...) We use a system called CDMA whereas a different system called GSM is popular elsewhere.
