3x² + 4x - 5 = 0

It is asking for the value of the discriminant and asking me for the root description (as in, real, imaginary, and how many of each).

how do I do that?

The discriminant is the part of the quadratic equation under the square root (b^2 - 4ac)

If its positive you have real roots, if it's negative you have imaginary roots. Since the square root is and real value, both a positive and negative roots exist, meaning you have tow answers.
