You could always ask your supervisor. Phrase it as that you've asked the head receptionist & she dooesn't have anything for you so you were wondering if there was anything you could do for anyone else. This way it doesn't look like you're trying to get the head receptionist in trouble but that you are motivated to work & not just sit around. It will also let the head receptionist know in a subtle way that you are aware of her actions. Be warned though that she may resent you a little for going over her head.

Yes. And because I actually spoke up and asked for more work, but did not have a head receptionist to hinder it, I was eventually promotoed out of that job.
Take your time doing your work, making sure it is perfect. Double check everything. Greet everyone by name and little to no social banter, impressing visitors you remember who they are. Smile a lot. And if someone in management asks if you are not busy, be honest and say I have completed everything given me. Could I help you with something.
There is no easy solution. If you anger the head receptionist (but never heard of that title) you never know what that would lead to. But making busy usually look like making busy. When you have down time, clean up the area, straighten files you can handle without abandoning the reception desk. Practice typing to increase your typing skills. Have a book that is about improving business and office skills on your desk and use it to fill time, etc.
Good luck

Yes I have encountered these sorts of situation. You need to be wary as the Head Receptionist might well be secretly planning to report to management you are "lazy" and the company would make more profit if they dispensed with your wage costs and instead pay her a bit extra for covering the little work you currently perform. Management would then say "Oh yes we noticed how lazy she is" . Believe me this sort of thing does happen. I would suggest the solution is to put in a grievance to management on grounds you are being denied the opportunity to improve your knowledge and increased productivity by her and do not believe this is in the company's best interests. That way you can go above her and prove you are industrious and responsible before she misrepresents you.

Kim - been there, done that
The Head Receptionist may be keeping all the work for herself or maybe she has not yet learned to trust your work.
The way to deal with this is ON A MONDAY MORNING, ask for a on-going task outside of your normal work...something that may take a couple of weeks to complete (like a filing job, or updating phone lists, etc.). If you have heard the Head Receptionist complain about a certain task (or a certain person that you/she supports), volunteer to do that task. If you do something that she really doesn't want to do, you will become her favorite employee and she will give you more work and great reviews.
Be warned, if you start volunteering for extra work you may end up with more than you want.

What a horrid difficulty! that's unhappy to appreciate that a lot of persons nevertheless think of like this. Did the dad and mom understand which you're wiccan in the previous she got here to artwork there, or is your faith common expertise at artwork? i'm basically very much shocked that she may well be allowed to artwork with an "evil devil worshiper". If her dad and mom are so brainwashed to inform their toddler which you will hex, or poison her I dont understand their letting her be in any touch with you. i for my section experience sorry for the girl in all this. She could desire to be frightened of you! My suggestion is to easily leave issues on my own. proceed to act as you generally might if she have been everyone else. Be advantageous, talk to her as you will possibly the different co-worker. possibly she will have the potential to work out which you're no longer the demon her dad and mom paint you to be. yet once you attempt to communicate to her approximately it, i'm particular it is going to reason hassle. Thats a definite way for her to assert which you attempt to "own" her or another nonsense. shiny advantages

Talk to HQ or HR and maybe there is another
position in the company with more responsibility.
see if you can get a transfer, tell them you would like a job with more responsibility and more of a challenge...
it usually is a good thing when people ask for that.
it shouldn't hurt.

I think you should speak to her about it as well as your boss. Simple as that. Of course, you should speak to the head receptionist first, tell her about the situation and tell her how unfair it is. And if she doesn't act, then go straight to your boss about it.

Ask your bosses boss for some extra work/responsibility's. This person does not want you to advance and/or is insecure of her position. Take the initiative, it wont go un-noticed..

She does want to keep the work for herself so she looks busy. I would stay at the job as long as possible until you are so bored you can't stand it or there is additional work for you.
